Hoërskool Vryheid het ‘n opwindende week gehad.
Ons Matriekklasse het hulle laaste Gasvryheid Prakties gehad en vir oulaas gebak en gebrou in die kombuis waar hulle al so gemaklik is.
You’ve probably never seen so many grey wigs, floral dresses, and walking sticks wobbling around a school yard. But on Friday, 19 May, that’s exactly what happened. It was “Dress Like Your Gran or Gramps” day—and yes, the teachers joined in too. Some took it way too seriously. Others? Let’s just say a blanket over the shoulders and a pair of old specs counted.
But it wasn’t just for laughs. Learners brought along donations—tinned food, old clothes, and forgotten toys. All going to the local Welfare organisation. Why? Because it’s the month of charity, and sometimes, doing something silly is the best way to do something meaningful. If you’re part of the Vryheid community, don’t just watch from the sidelines. You’re invited to add to the donations too.
Then there was Wednesday, 17 May. Our Head Boy, Wandile Xaba, took a break from leading the school to head to the Sharks Final CD rugby trials. Not a bad way to spend a weekday—unless you enjoy sitting through double maths. No word yet on the outcome, but just making it that far? That’s something to shout about.
Next up: Thursday, 18 May. Blood drive day. Learners aged 16 and up rolled up their sleeves and faced the needle. Not everyone’s favourite hobby, but it matters. One donation = one potential life saved. Can’t argue with that.
And then came Saturday, 20 May. Fixtures day. We took on Dundee High School, and the scores were all over the place.
Rugby results? Mixed bag:
- U/14s pulled off a tight 5-0 win.
- U/15s didn’t have their day. 0-8 loss.
- U/16s gave it a go but went down 5-10.
- Second team bounced back with a strong 24-5 win.
- And our First Team? Solid performance. 24-13 win.
Netball had its own scoreboard story:
- U/14 girls dominated: 15-4.
- U/15s followed suit with an 18-9 win.
- U/16s? Even better. 22-6.
- The 2nd team hit a wall, losing 4-15.
- As for the 1st team? They fought like champions. The score wasn’t in their favour, but the fight never faded. That’s worth more than numbers.
Chess? Quietest game, closest score. We lost 4-6. But hey, not bad for a Saturday filled with tackles, whistles, and chalkboard strategy.
So yeah, from dress-up days to drop kicks and donations, it’s been a wild, meaningful week. One part silly, one part serious—and honestly, that’s kind of perfect.
