1886

New Republic School

Die skool wat vandag bekend staan as die Hoërskool Vryheid het in 1886 tot stand gekom as die Nuwe Republiekskool, met Daniël de Villiers as eerste "meester" en wel in 'n tydelike hoedanigheid, omdat hy nie gekwalifiseerd was nie.

The school today known as Vryheid High School was founded in 1886 as the New Republic School. Daniël de Villiers, an unqualified teacher, was appointed in a temporary capacity as first master.

1900

Christian National Education School

The New Republic School grew steadily, but was closed in 1900 when Vryheid was occupied by the English during the Boer War. After the declaration of peace, a Christian National Education school was founded.

1903

Regeringskool geopen

Hierdie skool groei hierna redelik vinnig.

This school was situated on Stand 40 in High Street and, as there were no
buildings, a tent was used. The growth of the school, from henceforth, was rapid.

1906

Klipgebou

The beautiful stone building in Republic Street, which is now used as a gym hall, was officially inaugurated on 5 February 1906 by the Superintendent of Education, Mr C. Mudie, and the school found its first permanent home.

1908

Secondary education

In 1908, secondary education was started and, in April 1908, the Christian National Education School was closed, its pupils enrolling in the government school. As a result of this, the buildings which had been erected in the interim were once more inadequate.

Growth

Through the years, the school maintained a steady growth: there were more pupils, more teaching staff and more buildings. Sports and other amenities were expanded as the need for them grew, until today we have a magnificent complex of buildings and grounds of which everyone in Vryheid is rightly proud.
