We want to especially welcome the class of 2022 and know that they will enjoy their journey with the VHS family.
It is almost the end of the term and the start of the holidays and we here at VHS are working furiously behind the scenes to make sure that everything continues to run smoothly at the school.
We would like to encourage our learners to, in the words of Electric Light Orchestra, ‘hold on tight to your dreams,’ in an effort to motivate you through this last stretch of the exams.
This term has been jam packed with sport, fun and hard work. We have had some challenges and we have faced them head-on and hopefully, grown from them into better sportsmen and –women, better students and most of all stronger, more well-rounded people. We would like to thank every parent who motivated their children to work hard and do their best, every coach and teacher who nurtures our learners into future leaders, athletes and front-runners of their fields.
Some front-runners and provincial achievers that we would like to congratulate are:
Keegan Meier for being selected for the u/18 KZN Country District rugby side. We wish him an injury free tour in the coming holiday.
We also congratulate, Kyle Meier and Joshua Stoltenkamp who were both selected to play for the NKZN, u/15 cricket team.
And lastly, we are very proud of Connor High, Rudolph Benecke and Keegan Meyer, who were also selected to represent the u/19 NKZN cricket team.
The teachers and administration staff, amongst all the marking, was in desperate need of some motivation and team building. The male members of staff all piled into the school bus and had their teambuilding weekend last weekend. The female members of staff had their teambuilding in the form of a drumming session, this past Saturday. The session was a fun way to get rid of some anxiety and frustration, but also encourages the participants to listen to the person next to them and work together to create beautiful music. What a valuable lesson this was for our staff members; that we can create beautiful things even if we all dance to the beat of our drum. Thank you to the Science department for organising the event.
We wish all our learners a safe and relaxing holiday. We look forward to welcoming you back in the third term, a little older, a little wiser and much more relaxed.
Holiday quote: Holidays are about experiences and people, and tuning into what you feel like doing at that moment. Enjoy not having to look at a watch. – Evelyn Glennie

VHS is mourning the loss of another staff member. Mr Hendrik Swart started as grounds man here at VHS in April 2007.
In the nine years he worked here, he crept into many hearts with his positive, jovial attitude and always-ready smile. This gentle giant with a heart of gold always tried his best, no matter how difficult or plentiful the tasks he was assigned, He was a very devoted father and his pride and joy was his daughter,
Hy was ‘n toegewyde familie man wat sy tyd en aandag getrou aan sy vriende en familie bestee het. Hy was ‘n regte grapjas vol streke, stories en manewales. Sy sin vir humor sal oral gemis word, veral by die mannekampe.
His raucous laughter will be missed on the grounds and corridors of Vryheid High. Our sincere condolences to his family.
Rest in peace, Hamba gahle, till we meet again.
Mr R Grobler will also leave us at the end of 2016. We would like to thank him for the contribution he made to VHS and wish him all the best for the future..
The 2016 school magazine will be available this week and paging through this magazine, the commitment, dedication and enthusiasm of the staff of Vryheid High will become clear. They are instrumental in providing society with well-adapted and worthy citizens who can sustain themselves in any environment. Our sincere thanks to all the staff here who contribute to the overall success of our school.
This incident is just another sad reminder that every day we are blessed with is precious and we should make the most of every single day. So in this spirit we urge you to enjoy every day of the coming holiday and do the best with every day. May your Xmas be joyful and blessed. Mag 2017 vir ons almal ‘n jaar van opwinding wees wat besaai is met seëninge en suksesse!
Diary: Gr. 12 NSC Exam 24 October – 25 November
NEW BEGINNINGS!
We begin this new term with great sadness as one of our educators Mrs P Schulte passed away during the holidays on 8 July 2016. During her 40 year career at this school many generations passed through her hands. Our condolences to all her family and friends. We offer you this comfort: the footprints she left in many learners, colleagues and community members’ hearts can never be erased and so her legacy will live on.
On this ‘Mandela Day’ we also have new beginnings as new staff join the VHS team. Welcome to Mrs I van der Walt and Miss F Rawat in the Maths department and Mr C van Rhyn (student-teacher) in the English department. May your stay at VHS be a happy, fulfilling experience. At the end of last term Mrs K Bennie and Mrs I Venter left and we wish them well for their futures elsewhere.
It is going to be a very busy term and we remind the matriculants that the trial examinations begin on 5 September, so they should let their focus be on preparing well for these examinations.
To all educators, staff and learners of VHS welcome back and make the most of this term. In Mandela’s words: “Let your choices reflect your dreams and not your fears!”
